Meet the Cast of Our Next Show: "Eleemosynary"

Shayna Schafter - Echo

Shayna is a Senior here at the College of St. Scholastica, double-majoring in Peace and Justice Studies and Communications. Along the way, Shayna has been a part of several other shows on the CSS Theatre Stage, playing roles such as Anne Frank, Helen of Troy, and most recently, Mrs. Jennings. She is also head seamstress in the CSS Theatre's Costume Shop.

Abbi Primus - Artemis

Abbi is a senior with majors in Biology and Psychology. With a minor in Chemistry finished and her Webster's Scholar status as an Honors student nearly cemented, Abbi chose her Senior year as the moment to finally make the transition from medicine to education. She plans to spend the next two years in grad school earning her teacher license for secondary life science in a GTL program. This is the third production Abbi has been involved with at CSS, starring previously as the feisty Lucy Van Pelt (You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown) and the overbearing Mrs. Van Daan (The Diary of Anne Frank).

Sarah Jane Hale - Dorothea

Sarah Jane Hale, a graduate from University of Wisconsin-Superior, recently moved back home to the Twin Ports after living in California for 30 years. During that time, she was fortunate enough to work in the entertainment industry as an actress, a standin, and as a dialogue coach. She worked on several shows including Everbody Loves Raymond, The New Adventures of Old Christine, and 2 Broke Girls. This is her first acting role at CSS.

Thanksgiving Break Is Nearly Upon Us!

Thanksgiving is nearly here! We here at the CSS Theatre are excited to recharge our batteries, stuff ourselves with food, then jump right into our next performance: Eleemosynary! This show is bound to be a good one and you don't want to miss it. Here's a little glimpse of what this play will be about:

Eleemosynary - This play probes into the delicate relationship of three singular women; the grandmother, Dorothea, who has sought to assert her independence through strong-willed eccentricity; her brilliant daughter, Artie (Artemis), who has fled the stifling domination of her mother; and Artie's daughter, Echo, a child of exceptional intellect - and sensitivity - whom Artie has abandoned to an upbringing by Dorothea.

Have a great Thanksgiving break everyone!

Check Out Our Review for "Sense and Sensbility"! Then Come See the Show This Weekend!

Theater review: Art of conversation shines in "Sense and Sensibility"
By Lawrance Bernabo, for the News Tribune Today at 3:13 p.m.
"Even the coiffures of the two oldest Dashwood sisters speak to their disparate natures: Elinor is
simple and sensible; Marianne's overly ornate, right down to the twin ringlets that frame her pretty
face.
In Jane Austen's "Sense and Sensibility", it quickly becomes clear that Elinor (Katherine Grotte) feels
way too little while her sister Marianne (Jemma Provance) feels way too much. By the end of the
charming period play that opened at the College of St. Scholastica on Friday night, the girls will channel Goldilocks, get things just right, and live happily ever after.
Appropriately, the two main actresses shine most when they effectively trade places. Provance's high spirited Marianne glows once she encounters Willoughby, her would-be prince, but memorably
shatters when Elinor reads his fateful letter aloud. Grotte's best moments come in the second act when she pleads with the ill Marianne not to leave her alone in the world, and in both of her tortured
meetings with Edward.
In a nicely understated performance, Conor Reindl's Edward Ferrers is endearingly polite and equally awkward, while as the scoundrel Willoughby, Theodore Webster, quickly rubs us the wrong way. As
the soft spoken Colonel Brandon, Mitchell Gertken is the calm at the center of the dueling love storms.
Interestingly, Kate Hamill's script makes the narrative's turning point Marianne finally thinking about
somebody other than herself and fiercely defending her sister's artwork. The script also takes
advantage of every opportunity to interject comedy into the proceedings.
As Mrs. Jennings and Sir John Middleton, Shayna Shafter and the velvet voiced Adam Anderson
burst upon the scene like they just came out of Dickens novel. Armed with the world's loudest
whisper, Shafter takes Mrs. Jennings over the top and a bit beyond at times. Five "gossips" act as a Regency chorus and also serve as elegantly dressed stagehands, courtesy of costume designer
Sasha Howell.
This script gave a lot of characters their moments. Bailey Johnson is maternally stalwart as Mrs. Dashwood, Adrienne Skelton's young Margaret Dashwood has a flair for stomping off, and Nick Aspin and Hanna McLevish make John and Fanny Dashwood instantly dislikeable.
Bryn Soland's Lucy Steele smiles sweetly while destroying Elinor's love life. Cassandra Boucher's Anne Steele was vaccinated with the same phonograph needle as Mrs. Jennings, while Dawson
Ness' brief turn as the cottage-obsessed Robert Ferrers was a hoot.
The staging is theater in the square, so director Tammy Ostrander keeps the settings simple, often just an arrangement of wooden chairs, sometimes accented by a writing desk or a clavichord posing
as a pianoforte. Since with Austen the focus is on the art (and artifice) of conversation, this is quite appropriate.
Of course this staging requires characters to take turns facing in all directions, which means you may or may not see the dead eyes Marianne turns towards Fanny at dinner or her predatory smile when Willoughby returns to recite poetry.
Finally, while Austen would certainly disapprove of some things Elinor does in her final scene with
Edward, her behavior suited the audience just fine."

If you missed out on these amazing performances, do not fear! There are more performances this weekend!
The show dates are as follows:
November 9, 10, & 11 @ 7:30pm and November 12th at 2pm. The performance on November 12th is ASL Interpreted!

Hope to see you there!

Meet Shayna Schafter - A Wonderful Actress in Our Upcoming Show "Sense and Sensibility"!

Shayna Schafter, starring as Mrs. Jennings in our upcoming show, was so kind as to answer a few questions about herself and her upcoming role. Take a peek at her responses below...

Tell us a bit about your character in "Sense and Sensibility".
Mrs. Jennings is a boisterous old woman, whose only goal in life is to match-make beautiful young ladies with decent gentlemen. My husband passed away some time ago, and I myself have one foot in the grave... I think it is a fine thing to be young an handsome, although I have never been particularly myself...maybe young though...? I don't know, I'm having a hard time keeping up...

What year are you at CSS?
I am a senior. Whoooohoooo!

What is your intended major?
I am double-majoring in Peace and Justice Studies and Communications and minoring in Political Science.

What other activities are you involved in?
I work in the theatre's costume shop as "head stitcher" and also as a research assistant for Duluth Sister Cities International. I am president of Amnesty International on campus. I love reading, hiking, fun socks, fuzzy animals, travel, and theatre.

Have you acted in any shows before? If so, which ones?
This is my 6th show at St. Scholastica, but I have done a small amount of community theatre in Duluth as well. My last show with Tammy Ostrander was Zara Spook and Other Lures, in which I played a rather quirky fisherwoman named Teale! Last year, I played Anne Frank in The Diary of Anne Frank and Helen of Troy in Orestes.

What are you most excited for with this show?
This show has been extremely fun to be a part of! the cast is a lovely, goofy bunch of people, who I am happy to spend most week nights rehearsing with. It is a privilege to work with Tammy any day! I am excited for the show to open so that everyone can enjoy the product of our hard work! So, come enjoy us, enjoy you watching our production.

You can see Shayna Schafter as well as the rest of our wonderful all-star cast in Sense and Sensibility, showing Nov. 3, 4, 9, 10, & 11 at 7:30pm and Nov. 5 and 12 at 2:00pm at the CSS Theatre. Don't miss out on this amazing show!

Meet Bailey Johnson - A Fabulous Actress in Our Upcoming Show "Sense and Sensibility"!

Bailey Johnson, starring as Mrs. Dashwood in our upcoming show, was so kind as to answer a few questions about herself and her upcoming role. Take a peek at her responses below...

Tell us a bit about your character in "Sense and Sensibility".
I play Mrs. Dashwood, the mother of the three Dashwood sisters: Elinor, Marianne, and Margaret. She is a widow, as her husband recently passed away. Although life becomes tough for the family, Mrs. Dashwood is still the typical loving mother who only wants the best for her children. She is usually proper, but also shows a humorous side.

What year are you at CSS?
I am in my second year at CSS as a Junior.

What other activities are you involved in?
Co-President of S*M*A*S*H Volleyball, ASL Club, Sunday Mass Liturgical Ministry Volunteer, CSS Archives Volunteer, Intramural Volleyball Player, and Vox Anima (Women's Choir).

What is your intended major?
I am currently undecided with my major, but I'm leaning towards Art History (possibly a museum curator) and maybe a minor in ASL or Theatre.

Have you acted in any shows before? If so, which ones?
I have been in plays and One-Acts since my freshman year of high school, but this is my first CSS performance!
Plays: Alice in Wonderland - Alice
Wizard of Oz - Roq (Head Flying Monkey)
          Aladdin - Zanda (Tiger)
          Robin Hood - Robin Hood
One Acts: Ten Ways to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse - Susan
           Superheroes - 5 Characters
           Shell's Sister - Maxine (Mother)

What are you most excited for with this show?
I'm mostly excited about performing with the cast and the performance itself. We've all been working long hours to make this play the best it can be, and I can't wait to see the audience's reactions.

You can see Bailey Johnson as well as the rest of our wonderful all-star cast in Sense and Sensibility, showing Nov. 3, 4, 9, 10, & 11 at 7:30pm and Nov. 5 and 12 at 2:00pm at the CSS Theatre. Don't miss out on this amazing show!

Meet Jemma Provance - The Star of Our Upcoming Show "Sense and Sensibility"!

Jemma Provance, starring as Marianne Dashwood in our upcoming show, was so kind as to answer a few questions about herself and her upcoming role. Take a peek at her responses below...

Tell us a bit about your character in "Sense and Sensibility".
Marianne is the "sensibility" half of the two sisters the show is about, so she's emotional, expressive, and much less concerned with propriety than her practical and reserved sister, Elinor.

What year are you at CSS?
I'm a Junior.

What other activities are you involved in?
I'm in two choirs, and when I can, I participate in three clubs including ART club, ASL and Deaf Culture Club, and Queer-Straight Alliance. I also write for the Cable.

What is your intended major?
I'm a Psychology major with minors in Art and Deaf Language and Culture.

Have you acted in any shows previously? If so, which ones?
This is my first show at CSS but I grew up in a theatre family so I've been onstage since I was like, eight. We did Mary Poppins a couple summers ago and that might be my favorite.

What are you most excited for with this show?
It's an incredibly fun show with very earnest characters I care so much about, and everyone involved is so very fun to watch and work with. But I also really, really like doing accents. :)

You can see Jemma Provance as well as the rest of our wonderful all-star cast in Sense and Sensibility, showing Nov. 3, 4, 9, 10, & 11 at 7:30pm and Nov. 5 and 12 at 2:00pm at the CSS Theatre. Don't miss out on this amazing show!

A Little Bit About Our Upcoming Production: "Sense and Sensibility"!

The Kate Hamill adaptation of “Sense and Sensibility” was a huge hit when it performed at the Guthrie. In 2014, it premiered off-Broadway, and the critics loved it.

Here are just a couple of the things they said about Kate Hamill's adaptation:

"It doesn't get much better... It’s the kind of intelligent silliness that creates theatergoers for life among the uninitiated — and brings back the faith for everybody else...  Adapted with verve by Kate Hamill from Jane Austen’s classic novel, it is fast, funny, witty and ridiculous. But it is also incredibly adept at breathing hot and feverish life into an early 19th century tale... It is high entertainment, with Austen’s wit, wisdom and observations of the human heart at its core.” - DC Metro

"Charming, fresh, and witty... The play, adapted by Kate Hamill and based on Jane Austen’s 1811 novel, feels just as modern as any sitcom or soap opera... a notably female-centric play, offer[ing] brilliant facets of femininity.... A production for Austen devotees and newcomers (I promise!) alike, “Sense and Sensibility” is a joyful production that stands well on its own." - Minnesota Daily

With rave reviews like these, one can’t help but be excited to see this show perform on the CSS Stage! Performances are Nov. 3, 4, 9, 10,& 11 at 7:30pm and Nov. 5 & 12 at 2:00pm.

Have a great week everyone! :)

Have YOU Ever Wanted to be in a CSS Show?

Auditions are Tuesday (Sept. 12) and Wednesday (Sept. 13) for our next show, “Sense and Sensibility”! With 9 women roles, 6 men roles, and flex casting, there are plenty of roles available. No prior acting experience is necessary!

Here’s a brief plot synopsis to get you excited for the show:

Sense and Sensibility - A playful new adaptation of Jane Austen's beloved novel follows the fortunes (and misfortunes) of the Dashwood sisters - sensible Elinor and hypersensitive Marianne - after their father's sudden death leaves them financially destitute and socially vulnerable. Set in gossipy late 18th-century England, with a fresh female voice, the play is full of humor, emotional depth, and bold theatricality. Sense and Sensibility examines our reactions, both reasonable and ridiculous, to societal pressures. When reputation is everything, how do you follow your heart?

Hope to see you at auditions!

Final Performance of Orestes Wraps Up 2016-2017 Performance Season

On behalf of everyone at the CSS theatre, thank you to everyone who attended performances of "Orestes: Blood and Light". It is your support that helps us to keep being able to do what we love here at the CSS theatre. Sunday's performance marks the end of the 2016-2017 performance season. As we take apart the set and close up the shops for summer break, we look forward to what is to come next season. Here's a sneak peek of what is to come next school year:

Sense and Sensibility - A playful new adaptation of Jane Austen's beloved novel follows the fortunes (and misfortunes) of the Dashwood sisters - sensible Elinor and hypersensitive Marianne - after their father's sudden death leaves them financially destitute and socially vulnerable. Set in gossipy late 18th-century England, with a fresh female voice, the play is full of humor, emotional depth, and bold theatricality. Elleosynary - This play probes into the delicate relationship of three singular women: the grandmother, Dorothea, who has sought to assert her independence through strong-willed eccentricity; her brilliant daughter, Artie (Artemis), who has fled the stifling domination of her mother; and Artie's daughter, Echo, a child of exceptional intellect - and sensitivity - whom Artie has abandoned to an upbringing by Dorothea.

The third play is still being determined. Sounds like an exciting season here at the theatre! I will be returning this fall to keep you all in the loop on all of the news going on here at the CSS theatre.

The Countdown to Opening Has Begun!

With performances only two weeks away, the theatre is bustling with excitement. We can hardly wait for showtime. In the meantime, let’s learn a bit about the playwright behind this magnificent show. Helen Edmundson is the British author behind Orestes: Blood and Light. She adapted numerous pieces of literature for theatre and film. Helen Edmundson has won numerous awards for her works, such as the 2015 Windham-Campbell Literature Prize and the 1993 John Whiting Award among many others. Orestes is an adaptation of the Greek work Euripides. Her theatrical production of Orestes: Blood and Light went on tour in the UK in 2006.
Much of a play’s success can be attributed to a great playwright, and with such a well acclaimed playwright behind Orestes, we know that we have an amazing performance in store for us.

Orestes:Blood and Light opens March 31st at 7:30pm.

Have a great week everyone!

Get to Know Dawson Ness - The Star of Our Upcoming Production "Orestes: Blood and Light"!

If you come to CSS's production of "Orestes: Blood and Light", you may recognize a few faces. More than half the cast members in "Orestes" have been in at least one production during the 2016-2017 performance season. One of these familiar faces is Dawson Ness - a freshman here at CSS that was last seen as Delmount in "The Miss Firecracker Contest". He will be returning to the stage this time in a much more serious role as Orestes in "Orestes: Blood and Light". Here is what Dawson says about himself and this upcoming production...

Image result for theatre masks"You might be thinking,”Wait, isn’t that the guy from The Miss Firecracker Contest with that crazy hippie hair?” That’s right; his name is Dawson, fresh from the barber with a sleeker hairstyle. Dawson is a first-year student from Battle Lake, MN, though he suggests you defy this and keep your relationship with the Lake friendly and respectful. He is currently pursuing a double major in Secondary Education and Humanities. Dawson’s hobbies include pretending that he is invisible, going antiquing, and watching Netflix. Dawson likes to wear flannels and have frequent existential crises. He is a college student, after all. This is his second production at CSS."

You can see Dawson and the rest of the cast perform on the CSS stage March 31, April 1, 6-8 @ 7:30pm and April 2 and 9 @ 2:00pm.

With the Close of One Show, the CSS Theatre Prepares for the Next...

Greetings everyone!

After several phenomenal performances, the CSS theatre is now prepping for the next show. Within a few hours, the set was down after yesterday’s performance. I snuck a pic to show how drastically different the theatre looks now. Crazy how fast the set comes down, right?
Thank you to everyone that came to “The Miss Firecracker Contest”. The cast and crew are very grateful to have had such great audiences.

The CSS theatre is now gearing up for it’s next exciting production…
“ORESTES: BLOOD AND LIGHT”
Auditions for “Orestes: Blood and Light” were a success and we now have a cast! They will now be hard at work getting ready for performances.
Here’s our amazing cast:
Orestes …………. Dawson Ness
Electra …………... Keely Jackson
Helen ……………. Shayna Schafter
Slave …………….. Natasha Wagner
Menelaos ……….. Tim Kutz
Tyndareos ………. Richard Scrivener
Soldier ……………Delila Orlowski
Soldier …………... Matt Maybon

We have no doubt that they will end our Spring 2017 Theatre season with a bang. Here’s a little glimpse of what the show will be about:

As children, Electra and Orestes are banished by their mother after witnessing her brutally murder their father. Finally coming of age, they return to avenge King Agamemnon by killing Klytemnestra. The city divides over deciding their fate; should they be executed or banished? Inflamed by war, emotions escalate as many in the city are calling for blood…

Sound intense right?

Happy Valentine’s Day and have a marvelous week everyone!
